Supplemental Environmental Projects (SEPs)

Most enforcement actions brought against businesses or individuals for failure to comply with environmental laws are resolved through settlement agreements. A supplemental environmental project (SEP) is an environmentally beneficial project that a violator voluntarily agrees to undertake as an option to offset some portion of the monetary penalty.

SEPs are designed to protect and enhance the public health and the environment and often assist facilities in proactively managing environmental performance and compliance.
